Washington Square Park on 4/20 felt different this Washington Square Park on 4/20 felt different this year.Heavy police presence. No vendors. Less of the improvised chaos and street culture that once defined the day. At times it felt subdued — almost controlled. Some in the crowd suggested the atmosphere was a response to the snowball fight crackdown earlier this year. Whether or not that explains it, the heightened policing was impossible to ignore. But moments still broke through.A portrait in smoke. A quiet bench scene. A mock battle turning into public theater. A raised foam bat becoming a rallying gesture. Small flashes of spontaneity surviving inside a changed ritual.Maybe that’s part of the story now: not just what 4/20 is, but what New York feels like when public traditions are reshaped by control. These frames hold both sides — the surveillance, the performance, the stillness, and the people still finding ways to make something happen.Full gallery + story at link in bio.

50 years of MoMA PS1 and this felt like New York a 50 years of MoMA PS1 and this felt like New York at its best.Good music spilling through the courtyard, people dancing everywhere, breakers pulling crowds into circles, DJs keeping it moving, and art showing up in unexpected corners. It had that rare thing where a big event still felt loose, open, and personal. What I liked most was how much joy was in the space — people dancing, wandering, talking, discovering things.Happy to have been there to document the 50th. The End of Roe v. Wade

Richard Scalzo4 years ago1 year ago032 mins

On May 3rd, 2022, Foley Square in New York City was filled with thousands of protesters, all of whom were standing up for reproductive rights and fighting back against the recent ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade. The landmark 1973 decision legalized abortion in the United States and has been a crucial component in the ongoing fight for reproductive justice. The recent decision to overturn it was a devastating blow for countless individuals and communities.

The protests were powerful, with participants holding up signs and chanting in unison. The passion and energy in the air were palpable as people from all walks of life came together to express their frustration and anger over this attack on reproductive rights.

Many of the protesters were deeply troubled by the history of Roe v. Wade and the significance of its overturning. For nearly 50 years, Roe v. Wade has stood as a symbol of women’s reproductive rights and has enabled millions of individuals to make their own choices about their bodies and their futures. It has been a powerful tool in the fight for gender equality and justice.

The recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade represents a significant step backward for reproductive rights and the ongoing fight for gender equality. The protesters were committed to standing up for their rights and making their voices heard in the face of such a devastating decision. Many of them spoke about the importance of continuing the fight for reproductive justice and ensuring that everyone has access to safe, affordable, and legal abortion services.

In the end, the protest at Foley Square was a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for reproductive rights and fighting back against those who seek to restrict them. It was a powerful statement of solidarity and unity in the face of an attack on the fundamental rights of women and all individuals to make their own choices about their bodies and their lives.
