BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Rain pushed much of the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music’s Open Stages festival indoors on May 9, but it did not stop the music. Across Park Slope, church sanctuaries, classrooms, basement stages and community spaces filled with jazz, bluegrass, choirs, funk and young rock bands as neighbors packed into venues throughout the day.
Now in its fifth year, Open Stages normally spreads across stoops and outdoor spaces around Park Slope. This year, organizers had to quickly adapt after rain forced much of the festival inside. More than a dozen planned performance locations were consolidated into a smaller number of indoor venues, turning the event into an indoor neighborhood music crawl.
Despite the weather, the crowds still showed up.
Families, students, volunteers and local residents packed churches, basement stages and BKCM spaces throughout the afternoon. Many of the performances were standing room only, with people sitting in pews, gathering near the stage
The festival featured a wide mix of performers, including the Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale, student jazz ensembles, bluegrass groups and teen bands performing music inspired by 1990s alternative rock acts like the Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Churches throughout Park Slope became temporary performance spaces as audiences moved between different venues during the festival.
Groups including The DaFunkies, Checkmate, Jaw, the BKCM Jazz Travelers and the West Side Cowboys performed throughout the day, while BKCM volunteers helped guide attendees between locations and keep the event running smoothly despite the rain.
Open Stages also highlighted BKCM’s larger mission of supporting music education and therapy programs that reach thousands of New Yorkers across the five boroughs. Donation tables, BKCM signage and volunteer stations appeared throughout the festival spaces as attendees gathered to support local music and community arts.
What could have become a weather-disrupted event instead became a packed day of live music across Park Slope, with the neighborhood still turning out despite the rain.
