Kansas City Current needed only 22 seconds to take the lead. Gotham FC answered with two first-half goals and turned the early shock into a physical 2–1 comeback victory.
The Gotham FC vs Kansas City Current 2026 matchup opened at full speed when Amelia White finished a low effort past Ann-Katrin Berger almost immediately after kickoff. Croix Bethune supplied the assist, and the visitors suddenly had a 1–0 advantage before the crowd had settled into the night.
Gotham did not allow the goal to change its approach. The home side pushed play back toward Kansas City’s penalty area and quickly began creating the chances that would reshape the match.
Midge Purce brought Gotham level in the 13th minute. Jaedyn Shaw sent a free kick into the penalty area, where the loose ball fell to Purce for a low finish into the left corner. It was Purce’s third goal of the season, her third in five appearances and her 20th regular-season goal for Gotham.

The intensity rose again during a first-half confrontation. Kansas City defender Elizabeth Ball was initially shown a red card, but the decision was reduced to a yellow after VAR review. Ball remained in the match, and the official report recorded the 27th-minute misconduct as a yellow card for argument.

Sam Kerr completed the comeback in the 41st minute, redirecting Shaw’s weighted pass beyond Kansas City goalkeeper Marisa Jordan. The winner was Kerr’s third goal of the season and her 80th NWSL regular-season goal, making her the first player in league history to reach that mark. Her 31 regular-season goals for Gotham also established a new club record.
One finish gave Gotham the lead and placed Kerr alone at a historic NWSL milestone.

Gotham continued to press after halftime. Jaelin Howell put the ball into the net, but the apparent third goal was disallowed when officials determined Kerr was offside and affected the play. Jordan kept Kansas City within one goal by making eight saves as Gotham finished with a 16–5 advantage in shots and a 10–3 edge in shots on target.

Acting head coach Shaun Harris said the team showed “real character” after conceding so early, praising the players for maintaining their approach and continuing to apply pressure. The result moved Gotham to 13-3-4 with 43 points, extended its unbeaten run to eight matches and delivered the club’s first regular-season victory over Kansas City.
Gotham also reached 24 points from 11 home matches, the NWSL’s best home record at that point, while conceding only six goals in Harrison. Full statistics and match details are available in the official Gotham FC recap.
Gotham absorbed an opening goal, stayed with its plan and controlled the chances that followed.
The comeback was Gotham’s third consecutive victory after conceding first.
The 2–1 result also gave the club its first regular-season win over Kansas City.
