Washington Square Park on 4/20 felt different this Washington Square Park on 4/20 felt different this year.Heavy police presence. No vendors. Less of the improvised chaos and street culture that once defined the day. At times it felt subdued — almost controlled. Some in the crowd suggested the atmosphere was a response to the snowball fight crackdown earlier this year. Whether or not that explains it, the heightened policing was impossible to ignore. But moments still broke through.A portrait in smoke. A quiet bench scene. A mock battle turning into public theater. A raised foam bat becoming a rallying gesture. Small flashes of spontaneity surviving inside a changed ritual.Maybe that’s part of the story now: not just what 4/20 is, but what New York feels like when public traditions are reshaped by control. These frames hold both sides — the surveillance, the performance, the stillness, and the people still finding ways to make something happen.Full gallery + story at link in bio.
