Svitanok NYC Fighting for Ukraine

New York, October 5, 2024 — Washington Square Park, a historic site for activism and expression, once again became the focal point for a poignant and powerful demonstration as the Ukrainian-American community gathered to demand justice and freedom for Ukraine’s defenders. Organized by Svitanok NYC, the event called for a fair peace for Ukraine and the immediate release of the Azovstal defenders, who have been held captive since the siege of Mariupol in 2022.

The rally, which drew a diverse group of activists, was marked by symbolic visual elements and heartfelt calls for action. Protesters stood in solidarity, holding signs with messages such as “Free Ukrainian Defenders from Russian Captivity,” “Justice Doesn’t Reign Until Heroes Are Freed from Pain,” and “Russia is a Terrorist State.” Many of the participants wore casual clothing with blue and yellow accents—colors of the Ukrainian flag—and several draped the flags over their shoulders as a sign of unity.

At the center of the demonstration was a striking symbolic performance. One participant, dressed in a blood-stained shirt featuring the colors of the Russian flag, was wrapped in red strings tied to other kneeling activists. This visual portrayal represented the captivity and struggles faced by the defenders of Azovstal and the broader conflict’s impact on Ukraine. With the American and Ukrainian flags prominently displayed behind him, the image powerfully illustrated the international support Ukraine has received in its fight for justice and freedom.

Washington Square Park, known for its vibrant and diverse community, provided a fitting backdrop for this significant rally. The event was not just a cry for help but also a testament to the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people and their allies worldwide.
